I am wondering what the first catalog was like. It had Kirsten, Samantha, and Molly with their Meet outfits and accessories, school outfits and accessories (minus the desks), Christmas outfits and accessories (minus Molly's radio; did Sam always have her gingerbread house?), and their bedtime things (nightgowns/PJs, bed, and trunks only), correct? So did Kirsten have nothing to cover up with at night since her quilt came out with her birthday set?

I am not sure when I first got a catalog, but I think it was in '88. The girls had their "complete" collections (all 6 stories) in the first catalogs I can remember. I think the earliest things I remember being added were the school desks and the extra outfits. Which came first? I remember my best friend having Samantha before I got her for Christmas '89. I loved all her pretty things! (But I thought her trunk was an ugly color. )

Let's see...you pretty much got it right, first catalogs featured each girl with accessories, school items (dress, lunch, books), Christmas items (dress, doll, gifts for Samantha of music box and stocking and box from Dad for Molly and St. Lucia tray/wreath for Kirsten), and the nighttime items.

Yes, Samantha has always had her gingerbread house.

Kirsten's quilt was originally sold by itself and the quilt kit was available with the Party Treats when it was first introduced. For some reason they combined the two things to make a new item.

It seems like the desks and new outfits came out in 1990 or 1991 and I think those were the first "new" items added to the collection since the summer and winter items. I think they might have come out around the same time as Felicity too.

on my collector's guide page i've tried to make a brief history of AG stuff. my oldest catalog is around 87 or 88 so i had to go on people's memories of the very first catalogs and from what i remember when i was young. but it outlines when things were introduced to each of the doll's collections etc...
hope it helps some

I scanned the covers and a bunch of images from the early catalogs. There's a link in my sig if you want to look.

I think a lot of stuff I thought I read on the board I actually read in Meg's guide. But in the history I couldn't find any reference to the trunks/beds/original nightwear of the first three girls.

I'm going off memories here- the only nighttime items available in the original catalog was the trunks, beds, and nightgowns. They hadn't added the night tables, nighttime necessities, or robes yet.

I so wish now that I'd kept my early catalogs. As a kid I had the very first one, as well as all the old "Pastimes" newsletters.
